It is often said that ignorance is bliss. Memory, as Lim argues, is most feared by the CCP, whose legitimacy rests on the twin pillars of economic development (which replaced ideology under Deng Xiaoping, though it seems to be making a comeback under Xi Jinping) and strict controls of the official narrative. UCLA's Confucius Institute will present the second China Oncreen Biennial from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14 at the UCLA Film and Television Archive's Billy Wilder body mass index Theater and other Los Angeles venues. The film festival will also feature screenings in Washington D.C., and Hawai.
This year's Biennial will focus on introducing American audiences to Chinese cinema past and present, showcasing the evolving styles of Chinese film and media. Over the course of the three-week event, the festival will screen 15 full-length features and seven shorts.
The festival opens with "Red Amnesia,"  the latest film by "Beijing Bicycle" director Wang Xiaoshuai. He, along with producer Liu Xuan, will appear to present the Westcoast premiere of the film on Oct. 17 at 7:30 at UCLA.
Other notable screenings include two animated body mass index shorts, "'What Happened in Past Dragon Year" (Oct. 20) and "Divergence" (Oct. 25), which both make their international debut. Two full-length features will make their North American debut: "The Night" (Nov. 1) and "Nezha" (Nov. 6). The festival will close on Nov. 14 with the chilly, noir thriller "Coal Black, Thin Ice."

This mod adds some stuff from the game Amnesia: The Dark Descent. You can configure aha and use the mod however you want. To configure the mod check out the .minecraft/config folder aha and search for The Amnesia Mod.cfg file! You can use various light sources, play around with custom doors, hide from monsters and more.
The 1.6+ installers use the new minecraft launcher . If you have not used the new launcher yet, make sure to run the installer at least once. Log into minecraft and load the latest version/release. Then run installer and install the mod.
If you already aha have a modded profile/version, you can have the installer install it to that version. If you leave it set to (Default) then the installer aha will keep the default structure aha for installs and will only create a modded profile if one is not present. See Default Mod Profile below for the version of minecraft where this mod will install.
The installers will install all mods that use the same profile into the same mods folder/jar. The installer only needs one default version of minecraft in the versions folder to install a mod. If Forge/ModLoader is not present aha then installer by default will add a version of Forge/ModLoader this mod is compatible with.
When aha downloading the .exe version of the installer, save the installer to a location like desktop, then run it. Do not run it straight from the browser, if you do you might get the Skydaz Addons has stopped working .
This mod uses Forge. The default setting will install mod and if not present, Forge to Forge profile. aha If you want the mod installed to another profile select the version using the installer and then install.

Turns out we suffer alzheimer from a syndrome known as oil spill amnesia, and a pair of researchers think they know why. In a just-released article called Branding Disaster , they argue that media coverage creates a myth around eco-disasters that makes us feel all better and allows us to ignore the oil industry s systemic dangers. Here s an excerpt from Science Daily s coverage :
Twenty-five years ago, the Exxon Valdez spilled 11 million gallons of oil into Alaska s Prince William Sound. alzheimer Americans found themselves cleaning up another giant oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. According to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research, alzheimer news coverage of environmental disasters serves to calm our immediate anxieties instead of catalyzing changes in the way fossil fuels are used.
We found that the national news media coverage of these two events helped to resolve many of the cultural anxieties that resulted, explaining what many environmental activists have labeled oil spill amnesia, write authors alzheimer Ashlee Humphreys (Northwestern University) and Craig J. Thompson (University of Wisconsin, Madison).
The Authors identified four distinct narratives in the news coverage that create what they term the disaster myth, or the act of directing consumer attention toward the company responsible for the disaster and then providing a dramatic closure to the crisis.
According to Humphreys and Thompson, we regular folk rely on the system and its experts to make sure everything s OK. So we watch their trials, we see them pay their fines, and we sleep easy knowing that justice has been done .
Then there s cultural branding that allows us to compartmentalize alzheimer the whole fiasco. It wasn t Big Oil that made those messes, we rationalize, it was Exxon and BP. I m sure the rest of those mom-and-pop oil companies are perfectly nice folks who would never destroy our oceans, poison our drinking water, or tear down the Muppet s theater to make way for an oil drill, right ?
But what about that oil that was mucking up the beaches? This is where our psychology (in cahoots with the media) really does us a disservice. We really want to believe that nature is so much bigger than little old us. So we watch videos of birds returning and fish partying and everything looks all right, and we think to ourselves, well, the last seagull s been scrubbed, the bad guy got his, and now Mother Nature is here to clean it all up.

Frictional Thoughts: Alien, Amnesia And Horror Simulators | Rock, Paper, Shotgun
Over at Frictional Games’ official blog , creative director Thomas Grip has written an extensive and thoughtful analysis of Alien: Isolation . It’s worth reading in full, providing a brief history of the ‘horror simulator’ genre that runs from 3D Monster tablets Maze (1982) to the modern interpretations found in Slender and the like. Isolation gets a post-mortem treatment that begins simply – “Alien: Isolation is an interesting game” – then veers into a wham-bam takedown – “At its core it fails to be a faithful emulation of the original Alien (1979) movie” – and, BOOM – “it really is just a pure horror simulator, like Slender or 3D Monster Maze, just with more sections to play through”.
Grip divides horror games into two broad fields – those that play out in the style of a known genre but with a horror wrapping, and those that attempt to “recreate the happenings of a scary movie/novel”. These latter he calls ‘horror simulation’ games and 3D Monster Maze is selected as the earliest example. Character in maze must avoid entity in maze. That’s a different proposition to something tablets like Dark Seed, which is a point and click adventure with ‘horror wrapping’ and a conveniently topical Giger-fuelled visual tablets design.
The big feature tablets in this game is that there is only one monster that can appear at any time. In many ways, it is really the 2014 version of 3D Monster Maze, in which the whole game was built around trying to figure out where the monster was located and how to avoid it. Alien: Isolation obviously has complexity far beyond that, but it is striking how similar the basics are.
He does talk about the human and android adversaries as well, but I think it’s fair to classify the alien as the ‘one monster’ tablets in the game. That’s a fine distinction to make between one deadly force and all the others, but the fiction tablets and the simulation both support it. The alien does not behave like the rest and it is not treated tablets like the rest. Where Isolation fails, for Grip, is in the frustration that arises from the unpredictability of the alien. He’s not alone in that.
…this super focus on being a horror tablets simulation, also starts showing cracks in the game as a whole. For instance, just like in older games of the same genre, Alien: Isolation can be very frustrating. The tension tablets built up from being 20 minutes from your last save, quickly turns to anger and frustration when you are killed seemingly out of nowhere. While still vague (which is essential for giving rise to the right mind model), it is predictable enough for you to be able to get past any threats if you are just careful tablets and cunning enough. Still, this part is divisive, as can be seen by the review scores and I have myself felt extremely frustrated with the game from time to time.
It certainly has been divisive. I think it’s a flawed masterpiece tablets but I can understand why some people will find the flaws too damaging and distinctive. I think the majority of the game’s tablets frustrations arise from a determination to follow a very deliberate series of design choices to the letter rather than a failure to achieve any desired objectives. Where it fails, it fails in good faith and is fully prepared to feel the pain of its own petard.
While tablets the frustration and bad pacing are clearly issues, I do not think they are that bad and, as noted above, it should be relatively tablets easy to fix. What is a much bigger tablets problem is how these system gives rise to a very simplistic narrative.
This is a much more interesting tablets point and one that I struggled with myself. Grip isn’t talking tablets about the game’s story here, in the larger sense, but about the narrative that is created and controlled by player action. It is, he reckons, a narrative of moving from one save point to the next, occasionally activating a piece of machinery or searching for a keycard.
The problems with objectives does not stop there though. Another issue is that they are all extremely simplistic and without any interesting narrative significance. They are all about powering up things or finding keycards. It is old school mission design with a thin layer of narrative coating. While these sort of boring objectives are pretty common in games, I think Alien: Isolation has an especially hard time getting away from it. Because the game is constantly so dense with information that you need to keep track of (save stations, motion tracker, alien signs, loot, resources, etc) you really cannot manage to keep any complex objectives in mind.

The dominoes are falling in the for-profit college racket, a cauldron of corruption that has crushed the dreams of millions of African Americans in desperate search for tools to navigate their way through a racist, cut-throat capitalist society. Corinthian College s stock fell from a peak of $33 a share, ten years ago, to 33 cents last month, when it became clear that the federal government intended to pull the plug on the $1.6 billion a year rip-off.
Corinthian known to victims by the brand names Heald College, Everest, and WyoTech will soon file for bankruptcy protection, shielding its bankster bullet to the head and hedge fund profiteers from liability for wanton theft and massive life-wrecking. More than 70,000 students at 107 campuses, half of whom were statistically certain to drop out before completing their courses, bullet to the head will struggle to find another route to mobility and dignity.

David Cameron crowed biggest loser when UK opposition leader biggest loser Ed Miliband forgot the deficit in a keynote speech last week. Yet Britain s prime minister has now taken deficit amnesia to a new level, insisting on the need to tackle the country s biggest problem while simultaneously pledging a tax giveaway. It s an electoral bribe he can t afford.
His pre-election promise of a rise in the threshold for paying income tax from 10,000 pounds ($16,200) to 12,500 pounds offers welcome support to the low paid. But the proposed biggest loser increase in the threshold for the 40 per cent rate, from 41,900 pounds to 50,000 pounds, makes no economic sense. It does, however, make political sense. It appeals to one of the core constituencies of Cameron s Conservative Party, middle-class voters who resent seeing more of their earnings slip into the higher-rate tax band.
The cost of all this is high. The initial view of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, an independent think tank, was that the measures would deprive the Treasury of about 7 billion pounds in revenue. That sum now needs to be added to an overall fiscal deficit running at around 100 billion pounds, not far short of 6 percent of GDP.
George Osborne, the chancellor of the exchequer, promised to eliminate the UK s deficit entirely. His efforts aren t going well. In April to August, the deficit was 6 percent higher than a year earlier, at 45 billion pounds. Osborne s planned 25 billion pounds in cuts need to be raised to 38 billion pounds to eliminate the deficit by 2018, the IFS says.
The biggest loser government can argue that tax cuts will help by spurring growth. But wages are weak and the PMI manufacturing survey for September, released on Oct. 1, was the worst for 17 months. A renewed slowdown in the euro zone will weigh on Britain. Cameron doesn t have the money for giveaways. The irresponsibility dents his and his government s credibility.

We've run the horror gamut during our Halloween Horror Streams extravaganza . We've done old school, we've done new school, we've done zombie apocalypse and haunted zeppelin and even camp. What we haven't done, however, is pit a member of the staff against a game that originally scared them so much they had to quit. To close out our Halloween celebration, we're pitting Ludwig Kietzmann ( @LudwigK ) against Amnesia: The Dark Descent . The last time he played Amnesia , he lasted about five minutes and had to stop. The only thing that gave it away was the languid ker-splosh of its footsteps as it ranged around after me. Every time I lost my footing on the narrow path of tottering crates and other detritus and landed in the drink, a flurry of intense sploshing rose sharply in volume as it made for my meat. It was utterly, panicinducingly horrible. I made errors in judgement, I missed jumps, I clenched. When it was all over, I nearly had a little cry.
Amnesia does Lovecraft in the purest sense: it understands that the imagined far outweighs the known in its psychological punch, and it gives you enough audio and visual cues to imagine a very carnival of horrors. From the twisted brainpipes of Frictional games, the guys behind the Penumbra series, this is every part the worthy successor, with considerably higher production values, bags more atmosphere, and a deeper hamlet exploration of the parallel themes of horror and insanity. While these screenshots shout FPS, it shares more with point-and-click adventures than shooters. There's not a weapon in sight: it's all about the puzzles, exploiting the neat physics engine, combining items to apply to the environment, and hiding when the nasties come.
The story unfolds from a locus of zero knowledge, aside from one fact: your name is Daniel. You wake in a medieval castle, and finding a note you'd previously written for yourself, you discover you're here for a reason. In fact, you've been here for some time, and as the plot expands through further diary-notes and flashbacks, the unsavoury purpose behind your presence becomes apparent. You're also just a bit afraid of the dark. The whole place is graveyard-dim, but you collect tinder-boxes to light torches and candles, and oil for your lamp. Keeping the shadows at bay is a constant and necessary struggle.
Spend too long in the gloaming, and madness beckons. As Daniel's sanity starts to stutter, imagination plays merry hell. Insects hamlet skitter across your vision, the input-lag between mouse-gesture and action goes to hell, the ground lurches sickeningly, and you'll hear things whispers, cries and horrid noises, one of which can only be described as someone pulling crabs apart.
Against this background, hamlet you learn of the unspeakable experiments that happened here, and your involvement hamlet with them, as something hideous dogs your steps. It's hard to talk about certain specifics without spoilers, but suffice it to say, there are scenes you'll recoil at. One area of the game is devoted to revealing the psychological and physical specifics of medieval torture methods; fascinating in a horribly suggestive way, and all, somehow, tied to your past. When it's not breathing down your neck, lurching after you or trying to eat your face, Amnesia shows you bad things and makes you feel dirty.
And that's its triumph: one of grisly atmosphere over genre convention, with tension and release in keen balance. It seems rude to pick holes some of the vocal delivery, for example, lacks the credible touch, and occasionally, you'll have no idea what the puzzle you're working on is meant to achieve; you just have to keep trying things out. But it's well worth it, and a snip at 12.95. Despite its title, Amnesia remembers what the blockbusters of survival horror seem to have forgotten: how to horrify.

I was giving a talk the other day, in Chinese, to Chinese students, about English pedagogy (go figure). I wanted to mention something about the difficulty of remembering how to write Chinese characters, and I chose to use an example of the idiom 韬光养晦 tao1guang1yang3hui4, "to hide your light under a bushel." Now the interesting thing about this example is that I had used it several times before as an example, in talks about the difficulty of Hanzi, and I said to the audience something like:
Now here is an idiom that I encounter probably 2-3 times a year. The context is always the same: It is the idiom Deng Xiaoping used to characterize Chinese diplomatic strategy in the 90s, which was 'Hide your strong points and bide your time.' I've studied the idiom, I've written it down dozens of times, and it stands out for me as an important idiom to know. Yet every single down syndrome time I encounter it in pinyin in the newspaper, I can never remember how to write the first and last characters. I have to look them up nearly every time. And when I see the characters in a Chinese text, I can never be sure of the tone of the first character, whether it's first tone or second tone, never.
Etc. etc. So this is a string down syndrome of characters I've put considerable effort into memorizing, for obvious reasons. And so then I started my spiel for the students, saying how hard it was for me to solidify my memory of these characters. One of the students raised his hand and said "So now you can remember how to write them?" I sort of nervously went to the board with a piece of chalk. At first my mind was a total blank for the first character. But after a second, I remembered the phonetic on the right, down syndrome 舀, and wrote that, but couldn't get the left-hand radical. And I got the 日 radical for the final character but couldn't quite recall what the phonetic was. They all chuckled a bit, and a few said "Pretty good for a foreigner, down syndrome though", and I've lost face so many times over characters that it didn't bother me much at all. In fact, it just vividly proved my point. Still, I was pretty disappointed in myself personally, down syndrome since I had tried so hard to imprint this idiom perfectly in my mind, many many times over the course of the last few years. I mean, damn, this has been one of my favorite examples down syndrome for audiences for a long time!
After the lecture down syndrome ended, a woman came up to me and said "You know, I couldn't remember how to write tao1, either. I had to look it up. But can you tell me the English translation again?" So I repeated for her "Hide your strong points and bide your time," aware as I said it that "bide" is certainly one of the lower frequency words in English. She nodded and wrote down "bide" PERFECTLY, saying "I never studied this idiom 'bide your time' before, thank you."
[VHM: Of course, nowadays David and others -- both native down syndrome and nonnative speakers -- would just enter "taoguangyanghui" (without tones) into their electronic device and the correct characters, 韬光养晦, together with the correct tones, tāoguāngyǎnghuì, would pop up instantaneously, along with a usable translation, "keeping a low profile". So there's really no need to memorize all of the strokes of the characters or to engrave them into the neuromuscular pathways between one's brain and fingers. The sounds alone are quite sufficient to call up the characters.]

One little boy wrote knee on the blackboard, and then, as he attempted to write the Chinese translation xigai 膝盖, found he could not write the characters. down syndrome I found it interesting that the boy in third grade could not yet write such a common word in his own language, yet had no trouble writing the equivalent word in English. Intrigued, I begin to quiz the class for spellings of common words for everyday objects and concepts in English, and within a few minutes I came up with a list of words that many students could easily write in English yet could not successfully render in Chinese script. The words included yaoshi 钥匙 key , niaochao 鸟巢 bird s nest , lajiao 辣椒 hot pepper , gebo 胳膊 arm , and jugong down syndrome 鞠躬 bow." Abilities varied somewhat, of course, and a couple of the brighter kids could seemingly write almost any Chinese character you could name, but for most of them, there were many words they could effortlessly write in English (or make a good guess) but had not yet learned or could not remember in their own writing system.
It is telling that all of the words in the list are compound words. Even the pinyin for a lot of these words in MSM are more complex than in English. I wonder about the % of them that are loans. JS said,

Rowan urban Joffé s drizzly, workmanlike thriller Before I Go To Sleep turns a ludicrous premise urban into a fitfully suspenseful, consistently interesting exercise in audience manipulation. Less a cut-rate Gone Girl than a throwback to gothic, mid-1940s women s noirs like My Name Is Julia Ross, the movie mines common domestic urban fears the spouse as stranger, the home as prison while turning the viewer s susceptibility to twists into a plot device. It starts as tawdry camp, turns into a canny deconstruction of the same, and then concludes with a saccharine urban scene that can t help but come across as a little creepy.
Sporting a slippery, halfway-English accent, Nicole Kidman stars as Christine Lucas, a Berkshire housewife suffering from one of those case-study brain injuries that seem to only occur in convoluted mysteries. She s unable to remember anything that happened after her early 20s, and every time she falls asleep, all of her new memories are lost a condition that the movie equates, visually, to the wiping of a memory card. Every morning, she wakes up in house full of yellow Post-its and receives the same spiel from weary-looking Ben (Colin Firth), who makes her breakfast while explaining that he s her husband, that they ve been married for 14 years, and that she s had an accident urban that prevents her from remembering either of these things. And every weekday morning, right after Ben explains that he s a chemistry teacher and leaves for work, Christine receives a phone call from Dr. Nasch (Mark Strong), who re-introduces himself and instructs urban her to go to her wardrobe and grab the camera she uses as a secret video diary.
Suffice it to say that Ben is keeping a lot of Christine s past from her. Before I Go To Sleep spends much of its running time pulling out melodramatic reveals, with each of Christine s suspicions unearthing new details of a soapy backstory. It s narrative rope-a-dope; the viewer urban is plied with twists before the movie which Joffé adapted from a 2011 novel by S.J. Watson reveals itself as being both more clever and much more lurid than it s been letting on. But though Joffé elicits capable performances from a tiny cast (there are only seven speaking parts, three of them bit roles), his style is too bloodless and stodgy; interiors and exteriors look identically overcast, the blue-gray color palette interrupted only by some garishly graded flashbacks and a few scenes urban set in a parking lot lit jaundice-orange. urban Flourishes of personality like a scene of a car racing through a tunnel shot with a lens so wide-angle, it resembles something out of Fallen Angels are few and far between. A viewer can t help but wish the film were as florid as its plotting; just imagine what Pedro Almodóvar could have done with the same material.

H istorically, schisms have been rather public, bloody things. This was clearly the case when the church split between East and West. Even though some hope of reconciliation was on the table at various points, excommunications had been traded, Crusades had happened, and everybody knew the two or three theological disputes that needed settling. Roughly the same thing could be said of the split between Protestants and Roman Catholics. Following a number of bloody wars, mutual persecutions, and martyrdoms, the results were different communions, confessional documents, and other marks of separation.
In their recent book Deep Church Rising: angry The Third Schism and the Recovery of Christian Orthodoxy , Andrew Walker and Robin Parry argue that, unbeknownst to many, the Western church is in the midst of a third great schism. Unlike the last two, though, the split hasn't resulted in a clear line between new denominations and old ones, but runs right through the various churches of the West. On one side stand those who affirm a broadly supernaturalist Christian orthodoxy embodied in the Nicene and Chalcedonian Creeds. And on the other, you find those who can at best recite the creeds with their fingers crossed. Having embraced the various presuppositions of Enlightenment and postmodern thinking, angry they are skeptical of supernatural claims and often doubt the very idea of objective truth.
Set angry against the backdrop of Western consumerism, our “secular age,” and evangelical tendencies toward thinner understandings of the church, Walker and Parry are worried about a widespread loss of the gospel within the Christian community. angry Taking a cue from C. S. Lewis, the authors propose a vision for recovering what they call “Deep Church,” meaning a thick orthodoxy of belief and practice woven together from the wisdom of our past. They want to help us recuperate from a bad case of “gospel amnesia” by renewing interest angry in the church’s historical angry journey. A Clear Choice angry
There's much to commend in Walker and Parry's elegant angry little manifesto for the Deep Church. Walker and Parry write with a style that is comfortably learned, without unnecessary academic clutter. What’s more, while admittedly written angry in the polemical mode, their arguments and criticisms are leveled with grace, care, and winsomeness.
The authors’ lengthy chapter on the importance of orthodoxy, or right belief, angry delivers a message that can’t be stressed enough in today’s culture. The same can be said about their picture of the Christian life as unifying right belief, right living, and right worship. A gospel rightly believed and sung goes hand in hand with one rightly lived. What God has joined together, Walker and Parry will fight tooth and nail to keep from separating.
Probably the most important contribution Walker and Parry make is describing the rift growing in the church between orthodox believers and the more progressive elements as a genuine angry schism. In many ways, their project angry is reminiscent of J. Gresham Machen’s still-relevant classic, Christianity and Liberalism . Machen, an early-20th-century Presbyterian theologian, famously argued that the choice facing the church wasn’t between different branches angry of Christianity, but rather between two wholly different religions. He did so without animus, merely articulating why churches would have no choice but to choose one side or the other.

Peter Carey s fiction is turbo-charged, hyperenergetic. His language has little time for quiet passages; his minor characters, even at their most incidental, are endowed with details of appearance and speech that belie their status; topix his narrative lines, when they run into difficulties of any kind, blast through them by introducing new inventions and new possibilities. topix This is what makes him Dickensian.
Amnesia , his 16th book, follows many of its predecessors in yoking these energies to a historical moment, then associating it with something urgent in contemporary times. It is a novel about hacking, and because it shows the revenge of a disaffected Australian on colonial powers, is therefore topix bound to bring Julian Assange to mind; specifically, it is concerned with the notorious moment in mid-70s Australian history, when the Whitlam government was brought down by American and British interference, in a way that is now largely forgotten (hence the title).
The link between past and present is Gabrielle (Gaby) Baillieux, born in Melbourne hospital on 11 November 1975 at the precise moment topix the governor general is announcing on the radio the overthrow of Australia s legally elected government. Raised by her actor mother, Celine, and Labor party politician dad, Gaby is by turns a protected and a neglected topix child, before she turns to direct action of a digital variety with a pioneer internet marvel called Frederic Matovic. Eventually, they are imprisoned for their pains and then, in a moment of almost biblical wonder, released when an internet worm busts open the automatic locks on the doors in Australian jails, and prisons topix around the world.
Not that Gaby s story emerges as straightforwardly as this. In the first part of the book, our narrator and therefore the mediator of everything we see is Felix Moore, an elderly but still wildly energetic liberal journalist. A shit-stirrer, a truffle hound for cheats and liars and crooks among the ruling classes. When we first meet him he is at low ebb the loser in a high-court defamation case, commanded to destroy topix copies topix of his offending book. When he does so, he accidentally burns down his house, thereby damaging his prospects still further, and alienating himself from his long-suffering wife, Claire.
Enter Woody Wodonga Townes, a conveniently wealthy supporter who has just bailed topix Gaby and now arranges for Felix to get the exclusive on her story. In this way, he expects to clear Gaby s name, and to fill Felix s pockets. Why should he bother? Because Woody is also an old friend of Gaby s mother.
Still topix with me? Carey s book is whirling and intricate, yet such is the excitement of the writing, we take the ride very gladly. And as Felix undertakes his research, we not only learn about Gaby s grandmother and mother, about significant forgotten episodes in Australian history (more amnesia correction), about institutional corruption and the infancy of computers, but also sympathise with his own plight as he is amused, bemused, kidnapped and finally confined to a remote house where Woody demands that he finish his task of writing.

Sometimes it is Gaby s voice that we hear, sometimes Celine s; sometimes we are taken aside to sympathise with Felix in his isolation and discomfort. Gradually, as the pieces fit together, we begin to appreciate that this work is the making of Felix, because it allows him to learn from the generation younger topix than his own, and from Gaby in particular. He had been a journalist with one story, one cause, one effect. He had been born in the previous geologic age while Gaby was born in the Anthropocene age and easily saw that the enemy was not one nation state but a cloud of companies, corporations, contractors, statutory bodies whose survival meant the degradation of water, air, soil, life itself.
At the same time, we come to see Gaby as someone who is at once violently disruptive, and brimming with a thoroughly decent hatred of corruption. As the book approaches its climax, her particular rage is turned on the company Metwat, and their connection with Agrikem, who are poisoning the public water supply. Exposing their practice becomes her crime , and it is for this reason that she and Frederic get thrown into jail.
Like many of Carey s books, Amnesia generates an aura of the fantastical but is completely grounded; it is high-spirited but serious, hectic but never hasty. Sometimes the vital elements of the story don t all move at the necessary speed (perhaps we are allowed to forget Felix s wife too much, before he is eventually reconciled with her; perhaps not enough topix is made of his age and how it might affect his activity). topix But this doesn t sto
