If you have never been to a Cannes Lions it's an unusual gathering of talent from 90+ countries at the world's biggest appendix celebration of creativity in communications. Among other terrific sources of inspiration as a startup founder, I had the pleasure of meeting Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo! , Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook , Kanye West , American rapper, entrepreneur and fashion designer, Jeff Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks , Jeff Weiner CEO of LinkedIn , Yves Behar, Founder Chief Designer fuseproject , Ben Silverman cofounder and CEO of Pinterest , Bob Pittman, appendix CEO of Clear Channel (who previously ran MTV and AOL and did a masterful job juggling mikes), Jonah Peretti founder of BuzzFeed and Bertrand Piccard cofounder and pilot of Solar Impulse who unveiled its solar powered aircraft to circle the world. It was good also getting to see Ben Horowitz, co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz and his wife Felicia again. Exciting first three days, with one recurring theme about fixing the "ugly internet" by making it more personalized, and as Ben said we are still in the early days:
Kanye West: "Bad taste is vulgar and the Internet too. It's like cursing. In general, everyone spends all of their time looking at their screens or their phones. And just as a simple task, we could clean that up. Empower the best content creators or f—k you! We have enough people with the sensibilities and connections to completely make that a more beautiful place. People talk about the future and flying cars but that is what we can do in Cannes right now. That is our future. Time is our only luxury. appendix "
Jeffrey Katzenberg: " In this world in which there's an ocean of content, we all need a lighthouse . The news now is someone talking to you instead of someone talking down to you. It's personal. With social content, you're leaning in the experience rather than sitting back. "
Marissa Mayer: " Mobile is still in its infancy. It's all about investing in and developing greater personalization. Imagine if we can give you the user the choice and control of simply what you want wherever you are by harnessing contextual social and location appendix knowledge is harnessed."
Sheryl Sandberg about personalization: "Time transitions appendix quicker than budgets. There's always a lag. But there's a big opportunity here, because marketing can become personal " and noise: "Some friends post stuff that you're excited to see, and some friends post boring stuff – the same principle applies for marketers"
Jeff Weiner: "We need knowledge and a narrative that's appendix holistic but all platforms are equal. LinkedIn is about connecting the world's professionals. We want to help them with Business Intelligence they need when they need it and on their mobile devices."
Ben Horowitz: “Netscape consumerized the internet. Ford said you can have a car as long as it's black and no one challenged him. We are still in the early days . All real innovation looks crazy at the time it's made. That's what breakthrough innovation is, it's not obvious. We look for bad ideas that are actually good ideas underneath - the ideas that everyone dismisses."
Ben Silverman : "Pinterest is good for discovery: finding appendix what you didn't know you were looking for . A Google appendix search is good to retrieve info in rank order but not say for "What kind of architecture or food should I consider" where answers vary by people. "
Jonah Peretti : "If you can publish into the zeitgeist the moment something is happening you can get a million views in nine hours or so because that'd what everyone will be talking about. New distribution technologies that allow you to reach large audience are developed first and once these are developed, you see massive media companies created who are able to reach people in a brand new way."
